STEDICAM vs HYBRID STEADYCAM

Which Stabilizes Better?

What is a hybrid Steadycam?

A hybrid steadycam it’s a mix between physic-mechanic and electronics, taking the advantages of both worlds, it is based on a mechanic stabilizer modified to hold a rotary head on top which has an electronic board and brushless motors to stabilize the horizon and tilt of a camera.

How Does a Hybrid Steadycam Work?

A hybrid steadycam gimbal camera stabilizer works with two different sources to stabilize a camera.

First of all it uses the Free power of physics in combination with a double shock absorber arm to do the main stabilization job that in the hands of a professional solves the 90% to 97% of the total stabilization, and then uses an electronic board with electronic motors to do the fine tuning to correct the remaining 3% to 10% to achieve the perfect stabilization result with less than 1 degree of inclination error.

Comparison Between Mechanic Steadicam vs Hybrid Steadycam

The main differences between a mechanic steadicam vs a hybrid steadycam, is that a mechanic steadicam in the hands of a professional operator can reach around 90 % to 97% percent of perfect stabilization once you are a professional operator.

A hybrid steadycam it’s a mix between physic-mechanic and electronics, taking the advantages of both worlds, it is based on a mechanic steadycam stabilizer modified to hold a rotary head on top which has an electronic board and brushless motors to stabilize the the horizon and tilt of a camera.

First of all it uses the Free power of physics in combination with a double shock absorber arm to do the main stabilization job. A hybrid steadycam gimbal camera stabilizer works with two different sources to stabilize a camera.

And a professional steadicam operator with hybrid steadycam will start from that 90% to 97% of mechanic stabilization and then from that point the electronic board will do the rest to achieve a perfect 99% to 100% perfect stabilization result with less than 1 degree of inclination error.

But that's not all, even if you are a beginner you will also get the same perfect level of stabilization, then of course for perfect framing it will take more time and experience as well as it will need to gain endurance and coordination only achieved with practice, because the panning it is made with your hand as with any other mechanic steadicam, creating a realistic organic smooth stabilization.

A hybrid camera stabilizer also reduce the time to learn how to use it because it does all the job with the electronics, so if you are a beginner you will get great results of stabilization as if you were a beginner with a 3 axis gimbal.

A mechanic Steadicam is a wearable camera stabilizer that absorbs bumps and shakes, is a portable stabilization system based on physic laws pulleys and counterweights that frees the video camera from the unwanted movements of the terrain surface as well as from steadicam operator’s body.

A mechanic steadicam is based on 3 main components, the center post or sled that has a camera plate on top, then the center post has a gimbal or handle where you grab it, and a bottom weight with batteries and a monitor that acts as a counterweight, then it has double shock absorber arm to remove shakes, and the padded vest to distribute the weight thru the operators body.

On the other side a hybrid camera stabilizer Basson Steady is based on 4 main components, the electro mechanic rotary head motorized with brushless motors and controlled with an electronic board, then center post or sled that has a camera plate on top to hold the rotary head, then the center post is longer and has a gimbal or handle where you grab it.

On that handle or gimbal handle we have 3 clamps to attach for example any 7 inch or 5 inch 12v lcd monitor that will be much closer to your eyes, at around one feet so it is much easier to frame a shot.

The handle also has a clamp to hold a cell phone to control the video camera with an app, and also has clamp for a wireless a zoom or lens controller attached to the handle, and then a bottom weight with 2 or 3 batteries that acts as a counterweight.

Then it has reinforced double shock absorber arm to remove shakes but with a decompressor to reduce the fatigue of your back and to let you carry more weight for longer periods of time, and finally a comfortable triple padded vest to distribute the weight thru the operators body.

HISTORY OF THE HYBRID STEADYCAM

A little bit of history of the hybrid stedicam origins

The first version of a hybrid steadycam was probably based on the electronics similar to the very expensive rotary heads technology used on real helicopters.

That expensive electronic gimbal technology was used first on a hybrid stedicam by the company MKV-AR that at least made it's first version around 2007, it was a hybrid stabilizer with just one axis of electronic stabilization, at that period of time the electronic boards and brushless motors of the gimbals and drones were not invented yet so it was a real challenge to make it.

The estimated price was probably around us$ 60.000.-

Also back in 2007 at Basson Steady we made our first hybrid stedicam with one axis electro stabilized called Constellation, a hybrid stedicam for heavy camera payload of around 13kgs also with one axis of electronic stabilization but with just 4 preset positions, horizontal, 90 degrees left and right and 180 degrees for low mode.

The estimated price was around us$ 12.800.-

As I said before at that time the electronic boards and brushless motors were not invented yet so the technology wasn’t ready or available, and the chances to using the electronics of the rotary heads of the real helicopters was very expensive.

Then in 2012 with the development of the controller boards and brushless motors developed for small drones, we were able to make the first version of a real hybrid stadycam gimbal the model called Basson Steady Infinia with one axis electronic stabilization but now with full electronic stabilization and brushless gimbal motors with a payload of 5,5kgs.  The estimated price was between us$ 10.800.- and us$ 12.800.-

Later in 2013 we made at Basson Steady the first version of a hybrid stedicam in the world with two electronic axis electro stabilized the model called Basson Steady Endless 1, a hybrid stedicam gimbal with a rotary head but now with two electronic stabilized axis with two brushless motors for horizon and tilt, with a payload of 6,5kgs. The estimated price was around us$ 14.800.-

Then by 2014 and 2015 new German manufacturers appear on the market, the Sachtler artemis trinity what is today the Arri trinity, the estimated price was around us$ 45.000.-, and also another manufacturer called Portahead. The estimated price I guess it was similar as the price of the Sachtler trinity.

Each one with different designs but both with an electronic board and brushless motors with double electronic axis stabilization.

The new versions of today’s Basson Steady 8 axis hybrid stedicam are much more advanced, powerful and easy to use.

It also comes with a new improved electronic controller board and powerful brushless motors for a payload for up to 8kgs, that will help you hold a digital cinema camera such a Red digital cinema camera or an Arri Alexa mini as well as any DSLR camera stabilized all the time even if you do not have any skills as a professional steadicam operator.

We incorporated and modified our best model of mechanical stedicam called Silverarrow, with the best of the electronic gimbal technology plus the experience of manufacturing and designing professional camera stabilizers for more than 22 years, to create the perfect hybrid camera stabilizer system ever made at an affordable price.

The new 8 axis Hybrid camera stabilizer Basson Steady model Endless is a great option and a complete set up at an affordable price and the best choice for you, with excellent stabilization results. You will achieve professional cinematic shoots at an affordable price starting at us$ 12.800.- scaling up to us$ 16.200.-

Is the Hybrid steadycam the future of professional camera stabilization?

At Basson Steady camera stabilizer we believe that the hybrid steadycam is not only the future but it is also the present of professional camera stabilization for filmmakers and cinematographers taking the advantages of both worlds.

We decided to build a new game changer in camera stabilization to help our customers to learn faster to become a professional Steadicam Operator saving a lot of time on the education of your brain and hands about how to keep stable a video camera, to achieve professional shoots.

And with the new 8 axis hybrid camera stabilizer model Endless, you will still have the power to control the Pan with your hand on the gimbal as always as to point your camera wherever you want as with any mechanical steadicam.

It's a ready to use hybrid camera stabilizer, you just need to put the camera inside the rotary head, then balance it up and down, side to side and front to back, and then press the ON button to make it work.

You do not need to change the P.I.D settings every time you put a different camera, you can run cameras from 1 kg up to 8kgs without tweaking any P.I.D settings, which is also impossible to achieve with any other 3 axis gimbal on the market such as the Dji Ronin or with the Freefly movi.

So If you are looking to update your film gear to the new standards of professional camera stabilization system for the filmmaking industry, and if you are already tired of carrying a heavy weight cinema camera with your own hands on a handheld gimbal 3 axis stabilizer that doesn’t solve all the issues of stabilization, then you must consider investing on the new Basson Steady 8 axis Hybrid camera stabilizer model Endless, the most advanced camera stabilization system ever made.

Hybrid Steadycam Camera Stabilizer Test Videos

Becoming a Professional Hybrid Steadicam Operator

Becoming a professional mechanic or hybrid Steadicam Operator requires practice and coordination to develop some skills and this takes some time, because its a serious profession that not only involves to have a great camera stabilizer but also your own brain, hands and arms must become one to frame a shoot and to achieve the look of a professional smooth style shoots.

Then you also need some time to understand that using a mechanic or hybrid stedicam gimbal as a real professional, means that you have to learn that is for slow speed movements, it is not for running like crazy as you mistakenly see on many youtube videos.

It is very common to see that when you put a stedicam to a person that never put one on his body, one of the first things they want to do is to run, and that's the first mistake to avoid, it is not for that.

To avoid that you need to calm down, take a deep breath, it also requires to have some control about breathing, to be concentrated on framing the shoot, specially due to the liberty you will have to move everywhere with a hybrid camera stabilizer.

You will also need to learn how to move and walk, how to keep the distance between you and the subject, then you must also consider the effects of lights and reflections, zooming, panning, tilting, the audio noises, and more, and when more accessories you add more things needs to be controlled by the Steadycam Operator.
