STEDICAM

THE ORIGINS OF THE STEDICAM

Who invented the steadicam?

Steadicam is a brand name that belonged to Mr Garret Brown the original inventor of the first steadicam manufacturer.

A few years ago the inventor Garret Brown decided to sell the brand steadicam to the Tiffen company, and now Tiffen is the owner of the brand steadicam.

The first Steadicam was invented in 1975 by Mr.Garret Brown in California U.S.A to carry heavy payload 35mm film cinema cameras giving to the operator total freedom of movement, and is still the most used camera stabilizer in the cinema industry today.

Then who followed steadicam as a professional manufacturer?

According to what we know, it was Glidecam founded by Martin Stevens that started making their own versions of a steadycam between 1991-1993 -1997 until today.

Then the third factory company was Basson Steady manufacturing steadycams since 1997, with our own version of a steadycam, we made several products, the name of the first steadycam models were: Gullwing 500, Bumblebee 600rc, Bumblebee 800, Blackbee and Silverarrow 925.

What are the basic principles of a stedicam?

The stedicam is a professional stabilization system for cameras that consists of a double shock absorber arm that act as a suspension system, then a center post or sled that has set of counterweights to provide stability with a gimbal handle to isolate movements from the camera and a double padded vest to distribute the weigh of the hole system thru your body.

In our store you can find the best deals on professional steadicam systems to stabilize images of guaranteed success.

The first stedicam system began to be used in the film industry in Los Angeles California as a substitute for camera travelings in the mid-1970s.
The ste
dicam operator has total freedom of movement to walk or run, as well as to go up and down on stairs to perform different smooth movements without losing stability.

The effect of the stedicam shoot allows the viewer to follow the scene in the front line and lives details that immerse him in the director's perspective.

What is a professional stedicam?

How Does it work to stabilize a camera?

A stedicam It's a professional mechanic camera stabilizer system is based on 3 main components, the center post or sled that has a camera plate on top, then the center post has a gimbal or handle where you grab it, and a bottom weight with batteries and a monitor that acts as a counterweight, then it has double shock absorber arm to remove shakes, and the padded vest to distribute the weight thru the operators body.

A stedicam is a wearable camera stabilizer that absorbs bumps and shakes, is a portable stabilization system based on physic laws pulleys and counterweights that frees the video camera from the unwanted movements of the terrain surface as well as from steadicam operator’s body.

The stedicam was designed to give to the camera operator the mobility and flexibility of a handheld camera with much more precision freedom and smoothness of a dolly.

The weight of a heavy camera mounted on a mechanical stedicam is perfectly distributed thru the whole operator’s body, due to that the hole weight is mounted to a comfortable vest which reduces the fatigue a lot, and also lets you carry much more weight for longer periods of time compared to any other 3 axis gimbal that all the mass of weight is on your arms.

A stedicam is an amazing stabilization system that changed the way filmmakers tell stories, it is perfect for following a character as they move through a scene.

Stedicams are also used for shots where there isn’t room, in narrow spaces. It is also great for walking backwards in front of the actors, filming them from the front as they walk, also for walking alongside the actors filming them from the side as they walk or run, or to walk behind the actors, filming them from the back as they walk or run, it is also for walking free through space.

A stedicam it is a great choice for getting closer to the main character to see how the world unfolds from their point of view.

How does it compares a mechanic stedicam vs a hybrid Steadycam?

MECHANIC STEDICAM vs HYBRID STEADYCAM

A mechanic steadicam in the hands of a professional operator can reach around 90 % to 97% percent of perfect stabilization once you are a professional operator.

The hybrid steadycam it’s a mix between physic-mechanic and electronics, taking the advantages of both worlds, it is based on a mechanic steadycam stabilizer modified to hold a rotary head on top which has an electronic board and brushless motors to stabilize the the horizon and tilt of a camera.

The hybrid stedicam use the free power of physics in combination with a double shock absorber arm to do the main stabilization job.

A hybrid stedicam camera stabilizer works with two different sources to stabilize a camera.

A professional stedicam operator with hybrid Steadycam will start from that 90% to 97% of mechanic stabilization and then from that point the electronic board will do the rest to achieve a perfect 99% to 100% perfect stabilization result with less than 1 degree of inclination error.

Even if you are a beginner you will also get the same perfect level of stabilization, then of course for perfect framing it will take more time and experience as well as it will need to gain endurance and coordination only achieved with practice, because the panning its made with your hand as with any mechanic steadicam, creating a realistic organic smooth stabilization.

The hybrid steadycam reduces the learning process abou how to use it because it does all the job with the electronics, so if you are a beginner you will get great results of stabilization like if you were a beginner with a 3 axis gimbal.

The classic mechanic stedicam is a wearable camera stabilizer that absorbs bumps and shakes, is a portable stabilization system based on physic laws pulleys and counterweights that frees the video camera from the unwanted movements of the terrain surface as well as from steadicam operator’s body.

The classic stedicam is based on 3 main components, the center post or sled that has a camera plate on top, then the center post has a gimbal or handle where you grab it, and a bottom weight with batteries and a monitor that acts as a counterweight, then it has double shock absorber arm to remove shakes, and the padded vest to distribute the weight thru the operators body.

On the other side a hybrid steadycam Basson Steady is based on 4 main components:

The electro mechanic rotary head motorized with brushless motors and controlled with an electronic board.

The center post or sled that has a camera plate on top to hold the rotary head, then the center post is longer and has a gimbal or handle where you grab it where you have several clamps to hold for example an lcd monitor that will be much closer to your eyes around one feet so its much easier to frame a shot, the handle also has a clamp to hold a cell phone to control the video camera with an app, and also has clamp for a wireless a zoom or lens controller attached to the handle, and then a bottom weight with 2 or 3 batteries that acts as a counterweight.

Then it has reinforced double shock absorber arm to remove shakes but with a decompressor to reduce the fatigue of your back and to let you carry more weight for longer periods of time.

And a comfortable triple padded vest to distribute the weight thru the operators body.
