INTRODUCTION ABOUT STEADYCAM

The Steadycam is a professional stabilization system for cameras that consists of a double shock absorber arm that act as a suspension system, then a center post or sled that has set of counterweights to provide stability with a gimbal handle to isolate movements from the camera and a double padded vest to distribute the weigh of the hole system thru your body.

If you are a professional or an amateur, in our store you can find the best deals on accessories to stabilize images of guaranteed success.

The steadycam began to be used in the film industry in Los Angeles California as a substitute for camera travelings in the mid-1970s.

The steadycam does not need rails to move around, so the operator has total freedom of movement to walk or run, as well as to go up and down on stairs to perform different smooth movements without losing stability.

The effect of the steadycam shoot allows the viewer to follow the scene in the front line and lives details that immerse him in the director's perspective.

A little bit of history about steadycam and the evolution

Who were the first professional steadycam manufacturers?

History of the first Steadycam systems

The first Steadicam system was invented in 1975 by Garret Brown in California U.S.A to carry heavy payload 35mm film cinema cameras giving to the operator total freedom of movement.

With his invention very soon won the Oscar for technical innovation, and is still the most used camera stabilizer in the cinema industry today.

Then who followed steadicam, it may have been a couple of handy and skilled people who made their own home made versions of a professional steadicam, due to the higher costs of the original steadicam those days.

So having said this, for us the second company in the world manufacturing steadycams according to what we know, it was Glidecam founded by Martin Stevens that started making their own versions of a steadycam between 1991-1993 -1997 until today.

Then the third company in the world manufacturing steadycams was Basson Steady in 1997, with our own version of a steadycam, we made several products, the name of the first steadycam models were: Gullwing 500, Bumblebee 600rc, Bumblebee 800, Blackbee and Silverarrow 925.

What is a Steadycam?

How Does a Steadycam Work?

A Steadycam system camera stabilizer is a wearable camera stabilizer that absorbs bumps and shakes, is a portable stabilization system based on physic laws pulleys and counterweights that frees the video camera from the unwanted movements of the terrain surface as well as from steadicam operator’s body.

The steadycam system was designed to give to the camera operator the mobility and flexibility of a handheld camera with much more precision freedom and smoothness of a dolly.

A professional mechanic steadicam system is based on 3 main components, the center post or sled that has a camera plate on top, then the center post has a gimbal or handle where you grab it, and a bottom weight with batteries and a monitor that acts as a counterweight, then it has double shock absorber arm to remove shakes, and the padded vest to distribute the weight thru the operators body.

The weight of a heavy weight cinema camera mounted on a mechanical Steadicam is perfectly distributed thru the whole operator’s body, due to that the hole weight is mounted to a comfortable vest which reduces the fatigue a lot, and also lets you carry much more weight for longer periods of time compared to any other 3 axis gimbal that all the mass of weight is on your arms. A steadycam is an amazing camera stabilization system that changed the way filmmakers tell stories, it is perfect for following a character as they move through a scene.

Steadycams are also used for shots where space is limited where there isn’t room, in narrow spaces. It is also great for walking backwards in front of the actors, filming them from the front as they walk, also for walking alongside the actors filming them from the side as they walk or run, or to walk behind the actors, filming them from the back as they walk or run, it is also for walking free through space.

A steadycam it is also a great choice for getting closer to the main character to see how the world unfolds from their point of view.

What are the differences between mechanic Steadycam vs hybrid Steadycam?

STEADICAM vs HYBRID STEADYCAM

The most important differences between a mechanic Steadicam vs a hybrid Steadycam, is that a mechanic steadicam in the hands of a professional operator can reach around 90 % to 97% percent of perfect stabilization once you are a professional operator.

A hybrid steadycam it’s a mix between physic-mechanic and electronics, taking the advantages of both worlds, it is based on a mechanic steadycam stabilizer modified to hold a rotary head on top which has an electronic board and brushless motors to stabilize the the horizon and tilt of a camera.

First of all it uses the Free power of physics in combination with a double shock absorber arm to do the main stabilization job.

A hybrid steadycam camera stabilizer works with two different sources to stabilize a camera.

And a professional Steadicam operator with hybrid Steadycam will start from that 90% to 97% of mechanic stabilization and then from that point the electronic board will do the rest to achieve a perfect 99% to 100% perfect stabilization result with less than 1 degree of inclination error.

But that's not all, even if you are a beginner you will also get the same perfect level of stabilization, then of course for perfect framing it will take more time and experience as well as it will need to gain endurance and coordination only achieved with practice, because the panning its made with your hand as with any mechanic steadicam, creating a realistic organic smooth stabilization.

A hybrid steadycam also reduce the learning process of how to use it because it does all the job with the electronics, so if you are a beginner you will get great results of stabilization like if you were a beginner with a 3 axis gimbal.

A mechanic Steadicam is a wearable camera stabilizer that absorbs bumps and shakes, is a portable stabilization system based on physic laws pulleys and counterweights that frees the video camera from the unwanted movements of the terrain surface as well as from steadicam operator’s body.

A mechanic steadicam is based on 3 main components, the center post or sled that has a camera plate on top, then the center post has a gimbal or handle where you grab it, and a bottom weight with batteries and a monitor that acts as a counterweight, then it has double shock absorber arm to remove shakes, and the padded vest to distribute the weight thru the operators body.

On the other side a hybrid steadycam Basson Steady is based on 4 main components:

The electro mechanic rotary head motorized with brushless motors and controlled with an electronic board.

Then center post or sled that has a camera plate on top to hold the rotary head, then the center post is longer and has a gimbal or handle where you grab it where you have several clamps to hold for example an lcd monitor that will be much closer to your eyes around one feet so its much easier to frame a shot, the handle also has a clamp to hold a cell phone to control the video camera with an app, and also has clamp for a wireless a zoom or lens controller attached to the handle, and then a bottom weight with 2 or 3 batteries that acts as a counterweight.

Then it has reinforced double shock absorber arm to remove shakes but with a decompressor to reduce the fatigue of your back and to let you carry more weight for longer periods of time.

And finally a comfortable triple padded vest to distribute the weight thru the operators body.
